First Stakes-Winner for Fastnet Rock
Tara Madgwick - Saturday, 7 March 2009

With five winners on the board and five stakes horses, former champion sprinter Fastnet Rock was overdue to post a stakes-winner and did so at Randwick on Saturday when exciting colt Wanted burst into Golden Slipper calculations after taking out the Group Three AJC Kindergarten Stakes over 1100 metres.

A winner at Rosehill last November and third in the Listed AJC Canonbury Stakes at Randwick when resuming from a spell on February 14, Wanted (pictured www.stevehart.com.au )settled off the pace and then charged home to score a narrow win over Purdey (Lonhro) and Our Joan of Arc (Beautiful Crown (USA).

“That was closer than I’d have liked,” John O’Shea’s stable foreman Scott Asprey said.

“He was only 85% fit today and that showed over the concluding stages.

“He’s a lazy bugger too and only does what he has to do.”

Bred and offered for sale by Ron and Debbie Gilbert’s Highgrove Stud, Wanted was knocked down to John Hawkes for $800,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale making him the equal most expensive yearling sired by Fastnet Rock last year.

Raced by the Hayson Bloodstock Syndicate and partners, Wanted has now won two of three starts earning $146,500 and is likely to have one more lead up run before the Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes.

Wanted is the second foal of the stakes-winning Snippets mare Fragmentation, whose dam is a sister to stakes-winner In The Mist, dam of Group Two winner De Lago Mist.

Fragmentation was covered again last season by Coolmore based Fastnet Rock, who is now the leading first season sire in Australia by winners (5) and earnings.

Highgrove Stud will offer the half-brother by Charge Forward to Wanted as Lot 496 at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
