First Stakes Winner for Elvstroem
Mark Smith - Saturday, 23 May 2009
It’s fitting that the same connections that guided Elvstroem throughout his illustrious career are associated with the up and coming two-year old colt Carrara, which ploughed through the mud to capture Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Sita Environmental Doomben Slipper (1350m), crediting the international champion Elvstroem with his first stakes-winner.
Trained by Tony Vasil and ridden by Nash Rawiller for Frank Tagg’s Arch Of Gold Syndicate, Carrara (Elvstroem x Crystal Sprite (Hurricane Sky) took his record to two wins and a third from three starts with a half-length win over the proven wet tracker Choistar (Choisir) with Taffy (Ihtiram (IRE)) two lengths back in third.
A first up winner at Seymour when gaining a protest, Carrara (pictured as a yearling) met a rising star in Black Caviar when a well-beaten third at Caulfield at his most recent start.
A $200,000 purchase at the 2008 Inglis Premier yearling sale, Carrara was the second most expensive of the 32 Elvstroem yearlings sold at the sale.
The Arch Of Gold Syndicate also purchased the most expensive Elvstroem, a $300,000 colt named Dorsoduro, who recently made an impressive winning debut at Bendigo.
Carrara is the first foal of the Melbourne winning Hurricane Sky mare Crystal Sprite, a three-quarter sister to Listed winner Crystal Finale and a half-sister to Adelaide stakes-winner Crystal Wit (Distorted Humour), the dam of the promising Fastnet Rock filly Fast Talker who has twice been stakes-placed this season at two.
Crystal Sprite was purchased at the 2008 Inglis June Mixed Sale for $65,000. At the same sale, Carrara’s weanling sister made $80,000. Crystal Sprite’s third foal is another colt by Elvstroem and she was bred back to the ill-fated General Nediym last spring.
With his first stakes-winner, Elvstroem will vault to seventh spot on the first season sires table. The son of Daehill stands at Blue Gum Farm where his 2009 service fee has been set at $27,500.
