Lonhro Colt Wins by Five
Tara Madgwick - Wednesday, 27 May 2009

Former champion racehorse Lonhro has been churning out winners this season and added another to the tally when the Peter Snowden trained two year-old colt Offhanded made a mess of the opposition at Canterbury on Wednesday when bolting away to win the 1200 metre juvenile maiden by five and a half lengths.

Offhanded made his debut at Sale on April 30 where he finished a close third behind the promising Shamoline Warrior, but a trip to Sydney and the addition of blinkers have worked wonders.

“It was Paul’s [Snowden] idea to put the blinkers on because he did a few things wrong on debut,” Snowden said.

The win was the 43rd individual winner for Darley based Lonhro (pictured) this season, the champion son of Octagonal running second to only Exceed and Excel on the second season sires list by winners.

“It gives me a big buzz when [Lonhro’s progeny] win,” Snowden said.

“I’ve got a few of them so I’m lucky and there’s not many of them that haven’t shown me something.”

Snowden said that Offhanded will race on and he will look for a suitable Saturday race as the youngster’s next start.

A homebred for Woodlands (now Darley), Offhanded is bred to be good being from the winning Quest for Fame (GB) mare Insouciance, a full sister to champion two year-old Dracula and half-sister to stakes-winners The Oscars and Sash.

Further down the page you see Group One winners Festal and Masked Party, not to mention HK International Sprint winner Inspiration so it’s no wonder Offhanded has some ability.
