The win in Queensland last Friday of General Nediym filly Fairchild in the $100,000 Magic Millions Two Year-Old Plate at Toowoomba again highlighted an exception to the seemingly accepted rule of giving a wide berth to the progeny of older mares.
Consigned by Willow Park Stud at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Fairchild is the ninth foal of 21 year-old Dancer’s Joy (NZ), who was 19 when she delivered the chestnut filly by General Nediym.
“She was a well grown, precocious style of filly with a big backside, but time and again we found potential buyers showing a distinct lack of interest and in some cases just coming right out and saying the mare she was out of was too old,” said Burrows.
This is a part of our ongoing series of articles leading up to the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sale where we will attempt to highlight five yearlings each week that ON PAPER at least, appeal as being suitable for a specific goal and this week we’re going to look for a Slipper filly.
For a fast and precocious juvenile filly there is a plethora of Black Type and rich juvenile events on offer with the rich Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic an obvious target along with the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, which has been a great race for the girls over the years.
Racenet’s popular columnist The Judge has been hit with an onslaught of yearling catalogues during the last week, as has everyone else in the industry, and this treasure trove of thoroughbred talent has inspired The Judge to produce some of his best work!
Magic Millions Book One features 885 yearlings, many of which, The Judge would dearly like to purchase if only so he can give them the name they so richly deserve.
