Older Mares Stigma Demystified

The win in Queensland last Friday of General Nediym filly Fairchild in the $100,000 Magic Millions Two Year-Old Plate at Toowoomba again highlighted an exception to the seemingly accepted rule of giving a wide berth to the progeny of older mares.

Consigned by Willow Park Stud at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Fairchild is the ninth foal of 21 year-old Dancer’s Joy (NZ), who was 19 when she delivered the chestnut filly by General Nediym.

“She was a well grown, precocious style of filly with a big backside, but time and again we found potential buyers showing a distinct lack of interest and in some cases just coming right out and saying the mare she was out of was too old,” said Burrows.

For a fast and precocious juvenile filly there is a plethora of Black Type and rich juvenile events on offer with the rich Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic an obvious target along with the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, which has been a great race for the girls over the years.
