When Magic Millions management finally elected to bite the bullet and separate their bumper January yearling catalogue into two books it was great news on the practical front for yearling buyers, but for vendors with horses in Book Two (January 15 & 16) there is a real sense of separation this year.
Media attention has focused on Book One as it rightly should with its cavalcade of stars attracting buyers from throughout Australia and all over the world, but with that sale now underway we thought it was time to turn the spotlight on what Book Two has to offer and try to find some potential winners.
This is a part of our ongoing series of articles leading up to the 2009 sales and this week we switch the focus to the upcoming NZB Premier Yearling Sale (Jan 26 &27) at Karaka where we will attempt to highlight five yearlings that ON PAPER at least, appeal as being suitable for a specific goal and this week we’re looking for a potential Cups horse.
If you are looking for a stayer then New Zealand is always a good place to start and with 503 horses catalogued for the Premier Sale there are plenty of candidates, whose bloodlines suggest some of our richest races might be within their scope.
The first major juvenile event of the season is to be run this Saturday at the Gold Coast in the shape of the Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic, so it’s time to take a good hard look at our babies on the Arrowfield Stud sponsored Racenet Ratings Juvenile Top 20.
TARA MADGWICK
Gold Coast Race 7 No. 4 Big Tony
Rough place chance in the Magic Millions 2YO race and one to throw in the trifectas, slaughtered last start, but does have ability and a good draw.
CRAIG TOMPSON Gold Coast Race 6 No. 5 Rock Kingdom
Bad barrier but going too well to not stick with him.
