It’s over for another year and unlike previous years in recent times where all has been rosy and onwards ever upwards, this year the Inglis showcase had despair, drama, some harsh realities, some surprise results and in the end more than a glimmer of hope for the future.

Who Can Stay the Trip?

The Group One AJC Australian Derby over 2400 metres will be run at Royal Randwick this Saturday and in trying to identify the winner in terms of potential staying ability, it’s probably best to look to the past with eight of the last 10 Derby winners either bred in New Zealand or produced from a New Zealand bred mare.

Very few Australian bred horses are bred with the aim of running a mile and a half and if they can it’s mostly by accident or a freak of nature, so in looking for horses with a pedigree to run over a journey you need to see some Kiwi blood or some imported blood from the Northern Hemisphere.

Sire Tracker Updated

Studmasters around Australia can sit tight for a while on snapping up any of the current batch of two year-old colts with a gelding taking last Saturday’s Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes in Phelan Ready and blue-blooded Manhattan Rain enhancing his standing as the first colt home this year with a gallant third.

While he has nothing to offer as a sire prospect, Phelan Ready did do much to cement the standing of last year’s winner Sebring, who is by the same sire in More Than Ready (USA).
