Bred by Maher and his father, Akavoroun is bred on the same cross as Tears I Cry, who provided Maher with his first Group 1 win in the 2007 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Both are by the Green Desert stallion Lacryma Cristi (IRE) out of mares by the former Widden stallion Salieri (USA).
Ridden by Michelle Payne, Akavoroun stormed home to defeat the front-running The Cleaner (Savoire Vivre) by three-quarters of a length with Gig (Commands) a length away in third.
It takes the overall record of Akavoroun to an impressive 6 wins and 1 second from 7 starts for earnings of $246,100.
"It's a huge thrill, I've always had a lot of faith in the horse and his last two wins have probably been his best. He's travelled well and really developed as a racehorse," Maher said.
"He's a really big horse, he's been ungainly and took a while to fill out. He's had a few little issues and taken a little while to come right but I'm just rapt that it's come off."
A half-brother to the Singapore stakes performer Ravages (Blevic), Akavoroun is the seventh foal of Salquetta a half-sister to Group 1 South Australian Derby winner Cheviot (Average Game) and to the dam of Tasmanian superstar Geegees Blackflash (Clangalang).
Salquetta has a yearling colt by Rebel Raider and was bred back to Exceed and Excel last spring.
Akavoroun is the third stakes-winner for Lacryma Cristi (IRE) (pictured) who died in April 2010 after 13 seasons at stud.
