Second Win for Runway Star

Tara Madgwick - Saturday July 19
She was the most expensive filly from the first crop of ill-fated Northern Meteor and she won her second race at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Gerald Ryan trained Runway Star won on debut at Gosford last year, but has had her issues in three subsequent runs featuring in the steward's report on each occasion.

Runway Star as a yearlingThis time she managed to put it altogether, leading throughout to win by a length, confirming the ability she showed when winning a recent 900 barrier trial at Rosehill in a brisk 52.7 seconds.

"Mrs Onassis won a trial in similar time and then won the Oakleigh Plate and Snitzerland did too and she won the Lightning, there is your guide," Ryan said.

"Right from before she raced I thought she was pretty good, I took her to Warwick Farm one day, I said to Brenton she was the best two-year-old I've got, she trialled awful but pulled up with hairline fractures in both hind legs.

"She had nine months off and then I was thinking her problem with hanging was coming from that injury but it seems she is just a runner, likes to have her own way."

Runway Star runs in the green and white Vinery colours and was a $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Belmont Bloodstock from the draft of Widden Stud.

Bred by Widden Stud and partners, Runway Star is the first foal of stakes-placed Commands mare Intuit, a daughter of Group I winner Wrap Around and half-sister to the dam of Champion 2YO Fashions Afield.

The current yearling from Intuit, a Star Witness filly made $150,000 at Inglis Easter this year for Widden and she has a Sepoy colt to follow.

Intuit is due to foal this spring to Sebring.
