Champion
trainer Peter Moody isn't frightened to send a smart horse to the sticks to
shake off maiden status and he did that on Tuesday with a two year-old that is
the most expensive Australian yearling by Darley shuttler Hard Spun (USA).
San Nicasio was sent out favourite for the 1105 metre juvenile maiden plate and
returned triumphant after forging clear to win by a length and a quarter.
A $215,000 Inglis Premier purchase for his trainer from the Woodside Park
draft, San Nicasio runs for a big group of owners who will be delighted with
his first success.
"He's a lovely horse, really well put together," said winning rider Les Tilley.
"I just let him find his feet and he found the line really well, he just kept
winding up."
Bred by Woodside Park, San Nicasio is a half-brother to good metropolitan winners
Ravenous Lass and City of Light and is the third winner from unraced Snippets
mare Munchie, a daughter of Irish Group III winner Eichtercua (IRE).
A Group I winning son of Danzig, Hard Spun has been a regular visitor to Darley
Victoria, but is off the roster this year after covering 115 mares last spring.
His best Australian offspring are headed by Group II winner Text 'n' Hurley and
stakes-winners Crystal Web and Royal Haunt, both of whom were sold to Hong Kong.
