Stakes Next for Striking Duporth Colt

Mark Smith - Saturday July 26

In 2010 Peter and Wendy Moran went on a search for mares to support their recently retired Group 1 winner Duporth.

One mare that came under notice was the stakes-winning Last Tycoon mare Tarcoola Diamond a class racemare who's five wins in Melbourne including the Listed Desirable Stakes and she was Group II and Group III placed.

Purchased for $26,000 as a weanling in 2000 by Tarcoola Stud's Kenneth and Denise Williams, Tarcoola Diamond made $430,000 ten years later at the Easter Broodmare sale.

It also helped that Tarcoola Diamond carried a positive test to the champion stallion Fastnet Rock.

The colt she was carrying was the highly promising Cluster who has won his past two starts with ease.

Cluster is a magnificent physical specimen as is Tarcoola Diamond's fifth foal Inkling (Duporth) who took his record to two wins and a third from three starts with an impressive win in Saturday's  Tab Early Quaddie Hcp (1150m) on the Kensington track at Randwick.

Like Cluster he is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and carries the familiar green and white silks of the Moran family.

Peter Snowden expressed some concern that the son of Duporth took some time to put Sheer Style away.

"He is just not focusing on what he's got to do," Peter Snowden said.

"He's loafing for mine, he's floating, he's laying in, I just thought he might have won a bit better than what he did."

"I left a bit in the tank because he's been in work a little while and I'm mindful of how long I want to keep him up but he's had a good blow and that's good for me, I can screw him down in the next couple of weeks for his target race, the (Listed) Rosebud (1200m) in a fortnight," he said.

"We'll wait for the Rosebud and see what happens there. For mine I'm thinking give him a bit of a break and come in for the back end of the spring carnival in Melbourne."

Tarcoola Diamond is a daughter of the Group 1 winning Baguette mare I Like Diamonds who is out of the Dignitas mare As You Like It who won the Magic Night Quality (G3) and placed in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes (G1).

Tarcoola Diamond has weanling Fastnet Rock filly and was covered by Exceed and Excel last year.

With five winners in Australia and earnings approaching $500,000, Duporth will likely finish third behind I Am Invincible and Denman on the first season sire table.

He will stand his fifth season at Kitchwin Hills Stud at a fee of $16,500.
