A winner on the track and in the sale ring, this sire has flown under the radar for too long.
The leading Australian third crop sire by individual winners for 2013/2014 and second only to high profile Darley shuttler Bernardini (USA) on earnings, Magnus has improved his standing with each year that has passed.
This season alone he has sired no fewer than 75 winners of $3.5 million headed by stakes-winners Magnifisio and Alpha Beat, while his 55% winner to runner strike rate has made him a favourite with trainers and punters alike.
A brilliant sprinter, who struck his best form later in life, Magnus has taken a while to hit his straps as a sire but as his progeny mature the results are really starting to come.
Magnus is fast approaching his first century of winners as a sire and among them are 11 Black Type performers headed by classy Group III winner and five time stakes-winner Platinum Kingdom.
Burgeoning results on the track have seen a resurgence for Magnus in the sale ring where his progeny have been in keen demand.
Magnus was the third leading sire by average at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale behind only Northern Meteor and Fastnet Rock.
His three yearlings offered were all sold at an average $176,667 headed by a terrific filly from Silverbeat that made $240,000 for Yallambee Stud when bought by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock.
She was backed up by a couple of cracking colts from Northpoint and Rose Syrah that made $170,000 and $120,000 respectively.
At the 2014 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Magnus was also in hot form finishing as the leading sire by average with all four of his offspring averaging $80,625 against a sale average of $25,268.
They were highlighted by a filly from Coniston Gem that made $115,000 and a colt from Zipstream that made $110,000.
Quite clearly the market has now settled on what Magnus can deliver and yearling buyers are prepared to pay good money for his stock.
Priced at a fee of
$16,500 at
Eliza Park International this year, Magus represents value for broodmare owners with commercial
considerations.
Magnus is very closely related to four-time Group I winner All Too Hard, who is by Casino Prince ( a son of Magnus's sire Flying Spur) from Helsinge (a daughter of Magnus's dam Scandinavia).
For breeders that can't afford the $66,000 it costs to go to All Too Hard, but would love to replicate the mating, Magnus makes plenty of appeal.
