Starspangledbanner
was poised to sire his first Group I winner this weekend with his two Royal Ascot
stars The Wow Signal and Anthem Alexandra both acceptors for the Group I Keeneland
Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh, but it now appears he will be down to one runner.
The Wow Signal had been training well since his win in the Group II Coventry
Stakes, but was found to be coughing on Tuesday morning by his trainer John Quinn.
Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Al Shaqab Racing, told Racing Post,"He
was an intended runner, but sadly he coughed this morning.
"It's a great shame - he was in fantastic form - but he looks almost
certain to bypass the weekend."
Connections will now look towards other goals with the Group I Prix Morny named
as a possible target.
Starspangledbanner has sired five winners and five place-getters from 13
runners in the Northern Hemisphere and is fourth on the leading first season
sires list for UK and Ireland by prizemoney behind Zebedee, Fast Company and
Showcasing.
The sub-fertile sire will cover a selected full book of 50 at Rosemont Stud
this spring.
