First Looks – Camelot and Declaration Of War

Mark Smith - Sunday August 24
Australian breeders' welcomed two highly credentialed young stallions, Camelot (IRE) and Declaration Of War (USA), to Coolmore Stud for the first time this week.

Camelot (IRE) (Montjeu - Tarfah, by Kingmambo)

Not that many years ago, Camelot (USA) would have commanded a fee upwards of $50,000 for a first season sire so he is attractively priced at $22,000.

His credentials are impeccable.

A 525,000 guineas yearling, Camelot is a son of leading classic influence Montjeu out of the Kingmambo mare Tarfah whose five wins from eight starts included the Group III Dahlia Stakes at Ascot and a further two black-type races.

Tarfah is herself a daughter of the stakes-winning Danehill mare Fickle a granddaughter of Cheshire and Lancashire Oaks winner One Over Parr, a sister to 1974 Epsom Oaks heroine Polygamy.

Go back another 15 generations the family traces to the legendry Hungarian mare Kincsem whose name often popped up during Black Caviar's undefeated rampage.

Kincsem retired undefeated after 54 races.

Sent to Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle, Camelot won both his starts at two culminating in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

The winning run continued in the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket, a 5-length romp in the Derby at Epsom and a two length defeat of Galileo and Sea The Stars half-brother Born To Sea in the Irish Derby.

The fourth Epsom Derby winner for the sadly missed Montjeu, Camelot came up three-quarters of a length short of becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Nijinsky in 1970, when defeated by Encke.

Declaration Of War (USA) (War Front - Tempo West, by Rahy)

After winning his only two starts in France for owner-breeder Joseph Allen, Declaration Of War joined Aidan O'Brien at three and by the time his career came to an end just over a year later with a third placed finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita had bagged wins in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile at Royal Ascot and the Juddmonte International over 10 furlongs at York.

Since the end of the Storm Cat/Danzig era, few stallions have appealed to European buyers more than War Front who retired to the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm in 2007 at a fee of $12,500.

The son of Danzig did not win past Grade II level but he quickly became a sire sensation.

In 2014 his fee had risen to $150,000.

A brother to stakes-placed War Pact and a half-brother to stakes-winner and multiple Group placed Vertiformer (Dynaformer), Declaration of War is out of the Rahy mare Tempo West a half-sister to the supremely talented Union Rags (Dixie Union) winner of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and Grade 1 Champagne Stakes.

Declaration Of War's service fee has been set at $27,500.
