Good Things Come in Threes

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 2
A lucky owner that has followed his passion looks ready to write a new chapter of success with a tried and true winning formula.

Shocking wins the CupHaving enjoyed the highs of racing with multiple Group I stars Whobegotyou and Shocking, Laurence Eales has now decided to branch into new territory in establishing Eales Racing, a syndication and consultancy business aimed at sharing his experience and success with a wider audience.

"It started as the idea of buying a few yearlings that would be raced by friends of ours and people that we knew and has now progressed to the point of launching a full scale licenced syndication business in the next few weeks," revealed Laurence Eales.

"We already have eight two year-olds that will be offered through syndication and they include a half-sister by Authorized to Boban and a half-sister to Cox Plate winner Maldivian by Street Cry.

"We'd be operating at a higher entry point into the market than a lot of syndicators and would be looking to target Group racing."

Chivalry as a yearlingAmong the yearlings purchased by Eales Racing in 2013 was a stunning Street Cry (IRE) colt from World Peace that was secured from the Baramul Stud draft at Magic Millions for $280,000.

The colt was bought in conjunction with leading trainer Mark Kavanagh, who prepared both Whobegotyou and Shocking.

Early indications would suggest this winning combination may now have their next superstar in Chivalry.

By the same sire as both Whobegotyou and Shocking, Chivalry showed promise last season in four starts as a juvenile, but at Caulfield last Saturday emerged as a serious spring prospect with a scintillating victory in the Group III MRC McNeil Stakes.

Eased back at the start from a wide gate by Glen Boss, Chivalry was content to follow the field, but when brought wide to make his run in the straight, he quickly switched on and found top gear.

ChivalryHe zoomed to the line passing horse after horse to take the 1200 metre sprint by a head, his second win from five starts with prizemoney of $186,650.

"In the autumn he oozed quality, but was very immature and even then he found the line in every start he had," Boss said.

"He's the best colt in Victoria, there's no doubt about that."

Bred on the exact same cross as Shocking, who is also from a daughter of Danehill (USA), Chivalry is the first Street Cry Mr Eales has purchased since he bought Whobegotyou and Shocking back in 2007.

"Kav (Mark Kavanagh) and I both liked him and we both had owners that were keen to go in him," Eales recalled.

"He was a big brute as a yearling and had the nickname of 'dozer' as he used to push all the other colts around and take their feed.

"He's grown into a magnificent colt now though and we're fielding considerable interest in him as a stallion prospect."

Chivalry is the best of four winners from Group III MRC Blue Diamond Preview winner World Peace, a daughter of brilliant Group II winner Light Up the World, who comes from the renowned Denise's Joy family that has produced a champion racehorse in More Joyous and a champion sire in Thorn Park.

His breeder Gerry Harvey has retained a share in Chivalry, so one might assume his stud career in the future would lie at Vinery Stud, which is part-owned by Harvey, but that's not the case.

"No decisions have been made about his stud career, so he's a colt that will be for sale at some point in the future," Eales added.
