Rock Hero Retired

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 16
This time last year Fastnet Rock colt Rock Hero was seen as one of the most promising three year-olds in the country after winning the Listed ATC Dulcify Quality, but 12 months on the decision has been taken to retire him following his failure to fully recover from injury suffered at the end of last season.

Rock Hero"It is a tragedy that Rock Hero was unable to achieve his full potential after such a promising start to his career," said his owner/breeder John Cordina.

Trained by David Payne, Rock Hero broke his maiden status by running a 'track record' of 1.31.4 for 1550m at Canterbury Park before going on to brilliantly win the Listed 1600m Dulcify Stakes at Randwick.

Unplaced in the Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes when he was injured and pulled up lame, Rock Hero followed up with a second placing in the Group II MRC Autumn Stakes at Caulfield in February, but it was apparent that his performance was affected from the injury previously suffered.

John Cordina will investigate stud opportunities for Rock Hero for the 2015 season, given his impeccable breeding credentials boasting two of the world's leading sire lines in Fastnet Rock and Galileo.

Rock HeroRock Hero is out of the outstanding Group II winning mare, Gallant Tess arguably the best Galileo mare produced in Australia.

Her progeny also include a 2yo Street Cry colt being trained by John Hawkes, a yearling filly by Redoutes Choice, and a filly foal by All Too Hard. She will be served by Snitzel in the current season.

Rock Hero is an outstanding type standing at over 16 hands and it is considered he will have much to offer as a potential stallion with the proven Danehill/Gallileo cross in his bloodlines and the speed and quality he demonstrated in a limited career up to 1600 metres.
