Storm threatens Sha Tin opener

Darryl Sherer - Sunday September 3

Tropical storm Mawar is threatening Sunday's opening meeting of the new 2017-18 Hong Kong season.

Hong Kong Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges is optimistic the meeting will proceed but told the South China Morning Post a decision will be made on Sunday morning, Hong Kong time.

"We will have a look at all the latest information we have at 7am on Sunday morning before making a final decision but I am confident at this stage that we will race, even though we may get a little bit wet," Engelbrecht-Bresges said.

"Naturally, we are continuing to monitor the situation, safety is our primary concern and I think it's prudent that we wait as long as we reasonably can while still allowing time to inform our staff and customers so the final decision will be made Sunday morning.

"With 88 meetings, we have to take the good with the bad as far as weather goes but I'm optimistic."

Tommy Berry has nine rides on the 10 race card in his first day as retained rider for trainer John Moore and Racenet will be helping punters with our experts tips for the meeting later in the day.
