Patinack Bows Out on Winning Note

Mark Smith - Wednesday September 17
As time is called on Nathan Tinker's once massive racing and breeding Patinack empire, it seems fitting that the larger than life Novocastrian should claim Wednesday's Group III Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle with a son of one of his first major purchases.

With Tinker's battles more in the courtroom than on the racetrack lately, Hooked was the final Patinack runner for trainer John Thompson.

Ridden by Blake Shinn. Hooked led all the way to defeat Rugged Cross($13) by 1-1/2 lengths with Fred Cowell's Mighty Lucky ($15) a neck back in third.

"That's our last runner, that's Patinack done and dusted," Thompson told Sky Racing World.

"It's been up and down.

"I won my first race here for him and my last as well.

"He has raced at the top all of his career and he has been around the money.

"Hopefully he goes on to bigger and better things for whoever buys him."

Third behind Criterion and Tupac Amaru in last season's Group 1 ATC Australian Derby, Hooked earned his first stakes success taking his overall record to 3 wins and 1 third from 18 starts for earnings of $450,750.

The 4yo entire becomes the 7th stakes-winner for his sire Casino Prince who gave the big-spending Tinkler his first victory in a Group 1 race when successful in the 2008 Chipping Norton Stakes.

All Patinack Farm's racing and breeding stock not already sold, including Hooked, will be consigned to Magic Millions on the Gold Coast on Sunday week.

A brother to the stakes-placed Casino Card, Hooked is the sixth live foal of the Sydney winning Lue mare Absolute Lure who was reported sold in 2012 to Shadwell Farm for $2,500.

A half-sister to the Group III Coongy Handicap winner Fire In The Night (Danewin) Absolute Lure has a 2yo colt by Monaco Consul and was covered last season by Casino Prince having missed to Skilled in 2012.
