as a Breednet 'One to Watch' when he opened his account at Seymour last month, Fastnet
Rock gelding Magicool showed his hand as a Victoria Derby contender with a strong
staying effort to win the Listed VRC UCI Stakes at Flemington over 1800 metres.
Partnered by Glen Boss and prepared by Mark Kavanagh, Magicool raced handy and
found plenty in the run to the line to win by a neck, his overall record now
two wins and a second from just four starts with prizemoney nearing $90,000.
"He was bought for the Derby and is very stoutly bred on the dam's side.
We targeted him very early as a Derby type and that's where we will head,"
Kavanagh said.
A $250,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft for Mark Kavanagh
Racing, Magicool runs for a big syndicate of stable clients.
Bred by Hutchins Thoroughbreds, Magicool is the first winner for stakes-winning
Galileo mare Perfect Truth (IRE), who won the Listed Cheshire Oaks at 11 ½
furlongs, so Magicool should only get better over further.
"He (Glen Boss) rode him confidently and he stargazed a bit when he got to
the front in the straight. This is his first race in town and there's a fair
bit of upside," Kavanagh said.
"These Fastnet Rocks over the Galileo mares are very stout and can get a
good turn of foot in a stayer."
Perfect Truth has a yearling colt by More Than Ready (USA) and has already
foaled this spring producing a filly by Snitzel.
Magicool is the 69th stakes-winner for champion sire Fastnet Rock.
