Blue-blooded
Epsom Derby hero Australia has run his last race with news overnight that he
will be retired due to a hoof injury.
A brilliant son of two champions in Galileo and Ouija Board, Australia won the
Group I Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and Juddmonte International this year for
Aidan O'Brien before finishing second last start in the Group I Irish Champion Stakes to The Grey Gatsby.
He was due to race next weekend at the Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot,
but a chronic hoof problem has brought an end to that plan.
"While it's very disappointing that we won't get to see him in action again at
Ascot, we're delighted to have him retiring to Coolmore for 2015 to stand
alongside his illustrious sire. He really has everything one would look for in
a stallion," said Coolmore's Director of Sales David O'Loughlin.
Australia retires with the overall record of five wins and three placings from
eight starts and will be a popular addition to the Coolmore roster in Australia
should he be sent to the Southern Hemisphere next year.
