Talented Stratum filly Tawteen has always promised to win a stakes race and broke the
ice in emphatic style at Moonee Valley on Friday night when coasting home to
win the Listed MVRC Crockett Stakes as she pleased.
Prepared by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Tawteen led throughout and zipped
away in the straight to win the fillies sprint over 1200 metres by more than
three lengths, her overall record now four wins from seven starts with
prizemoney topping $205,000.
Steering Tawteen to victory was Steve Baster, who has been aboard the filly at
each of her three previous wins.
"She looked the best I've ever seen her tonight, so I was happy when she walked
into the yard," said Baster.
Tawteen was a $260,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell from the Widden Stud
draft and is the second winner for US Group III winner Sprung (USA), a
half-sister by Grand Slam to Group I winner Tali'sluckybusride.
"She got the big Black Type today which is what the Sheikh was looking for, so he'll
be thrilled," said David Hayes, who indicated Tawteen would now head to Flemington
for a similar fillies race over either 1200 or 1400 metres.
Sprung has a two year-old colt by Star Witness, a yearling full brother to
Tawteen and has foaled this spring to Fastnet Rock producing a filly.
Tawteen was the most expensive filly by Stratum sold in 2013 and is his 25thstakes-winner.
The Golden Slipper winning son of Redoute's Choice stands at Widden Stud at a
fee of $38,500.
