Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday October 31
Saturday's Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington is shaping as one of the races of the carnival with several top-class colts striving to enhance their stallion appeal however the inescapable fact is the only Group 1 winner in the field is Earthquake, one of three fillies contesting the $500,000 feature.

The equal least experienced runner in the field, Rubick can do the right thing by the sponsor by earning a win here and adding to his already considerable value.

At the conclusion of his race career Rubick has been chosen to stand alongside his remarkably successful sire Encosta de Lago at Coolmore.

It's unlikely there will be a more imposing type on the ground.

The deceased Northern Meteor gave Encosta de Lago credibility as a sire of sires and Rubick's three-quarter brother Manhattan Rain (Encosta de Lago) can add further lustre to the family later in the day at Flemington as the sire of two live chances in the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m), Moonovermanhattan and Light Up Manhattan.

Consigned by Vinery Stud to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, Rubick was purchased by David Raphael for $460,000.

He is the third and penultimate foal of the diminutive Group III winner Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar), a three-quarter sister to Group I winners Redoute's Choice and Platinum Scissors and half-sister to Manhattan Rain.

Sliding Cube died in 2012 and her final foal is a two year-old filly by More Than Ready (USA) named Golden Cropper that has been retained by Teeley Assets.

Two sisters to Rubick, Rex Is a Star and Drifting Cube made $1,100,000 apiece at the recent Teeley Asset Dispersal.
