Champion
trainer Chris Waller drew first blood at Flemington on Derby Day when his Kiwi
bred three year-old Kermadec came with a well-timed run to win the Group III
VRC Carbine Club Stakes.
With only two previous runs under his belt for a win and a second at Warwick
Farm and Randwick, Kermadec was one of the least experienced runners, but rose
to the challenge.
He surged late to claim a narrow win over ultra-consistent Stratum Star, taking
the 1600 metre feature by a half neck, his overall prizemoney soaring in excess of $171,000.
Kermadec will now be spelled with a view to the Autumn Carnival and races such
as the Group I ATC Randwick Guineas.
A $260,000 NZB Premier purchase for Mulcaster Bloodstock from the Wentwood
Grange draft, Kermadec was the most expensive yearling by Darley shuttler Teofilo
(IRE) sold in 2013.
He is a half-brother to stakes-placed Good Winning and is the best of three
winners from stakes-winning Fuji Kiseki (Jpn) mare Hy Fuji, a half-sister to
the dam of stakes-winners Triple Elegance, Shoreham and At The Heads.
Kermadec is the 30th stakes-winner for Teofilo, a brilliant son of
Galileo that shuttled to Australia for Darley for four seasons and has foals
being born here this spring.
