In
2003, it was Danehill (USA) colt Elvstroem racing to victory in the Group I VRC
Victoria Derby and at Flemington on Saturday we saw him represented as a sire
with his classy four year-old Hucklebuck winning the Group III VRC Yellowglen
Stakes.
Prepared in Adelaide by Phillip Stokes, Hucklebuck took the 1400 metre contest
by the best part of a length, his overall record an impressive seven wins from
12 starts with prizemoney topping $470,000.
A $50,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for his trainer from the draft of
Squillani Park, Hucklebuck was the second most expensive yearling by his sire
Elvstroem sold in 2012 and is the second foal of Kondari (NZ), a winning
half-sister by O'Reilly to stakes-winners Kalamata and Kirvinsky.
Stokes had some inside information on the youngster as he trained his mother
Kondari, who had just two starts before breaking down, but showed well above
average ability in winning on debut and then finishing second.
Hucklebuck is one of 11 stakes-winners for former champion racehorse Elvstroem,
who stands for just $4,400 at Blue Gum Farm.
