Darci Brahma's Trumbull Back in the Good Books after Maiden Stakes Success

Mark Smith - Saturday June 27

Trumbull has proved to be a frustrating character for trainer Kim Waugh but he was on his best behaviour in Saturday’s Listed Civic Stakes (1350m).

Trumbull (Steve Hart)

Supporters breathed a sigh of relief when the son of Darci Brahma jumped away with the field after slow starts had proved costly at his past few starts.

With Tommy Berry in the saddle, Trumbull stuck on gamely to defeat Order Again (Iffraaj) by a length with Dealmaker (Dundeel) a short-neck back in third.

"We have had such a frustrating run with him this whole preparation, he has just developed this silly habit," Waugh told AAP.

"We've given him a bit of barrier practice at home. I just said to Tommy (Berry), hold his tail up like we did last week and give him a big kick in the belly, let him know you mean business.

"He's done my head in the last six weeks but it's a big thrill when you put so much work into them and everything keeps going wrong but you finally get a result for the owners."

With his maiden stakes success, the 4yo gelding advances his record to 8 wins, 4 seconds and 4 thirds from 18 starts with earnings of $335,610.

Pinhooked for $65,000 by  O'Gorman Racing out of the Sledmere Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Trumbull made $125,000 to the bid of Kim Waugh Racing Stables at the 2017 Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale.

A half-brother to the Group II Hawke's Bay Guineas winner hard Merchandize (Burgundy), Trumbull is out of the winning Encosta de Lago mare Pride and Passion who is a daughter of the Group 1 Golden Slipper heroine Calaway Gal.

Sadly, Pride And Passion had just three foals before her death in 2017. Her final foal is the unraced 3yo Makfi filly Pedestal.

Trumbull becomes the 47th stakes-winner for The Oaks Stud’s regally-bred Danehill stallion Darci Brahma who stands the 2020 season at a fee of $15,000 +GST.
