It is great news for a stud when a well regarded young stallion is represented by his first winner – even better when that winner was as impressive as Black Magic was at Kranji on Sunday.
Working hard early before taking a tricky position out wide off the pace, the Theo Kieser trained gelding spotted his rivals many lengths upon straightening but once balanced he really let rip!
Storming home down the outside, Black Magic hit the lead at the 100m and was drawing clear over the final stages… and the loudest cheers for him came from Larneuk Stud, Euroa – home to Black Magic's sire O'Lonhro.
"It is great to see O'Lonhro off and rolling," said Larneuk's Neville Murdoch.
"Black Magic has long been held in high regard and it was fantastic to see him win in such remarkable fashion."
"He was a lovely yearling and he has a real stamp of his sire who in turn has a lot of his sire Lonhro about him."
Bred by Gladys Grentell, Black Magic is one of four winners (from as many to race) for the Rancho Ruler mare Bent Zena who must have a great sense of timing as just hours before her son's big win she foaled a strapping full sister to him!
Black Magic showed great fortitude just to get to the races let alone win so well.
Showing plenty of potential with two-year-old trial victory in June, Black Magic had since endured a couple of testing set-backs – firstly an ulcer in his throat then a nail through his pedal bone.
But patience paid off for his connections and punters were happy to send out Black Magic a short priced favourite.
"He did a good job to win today as he did it tough," Theo Kieser told the Singapore Turf Club media.
"He was three to four wide and still won very well."
Jockey Danny Beasley was also taken with the style of the victory… "he wanted to lay in but he scored a very nice win in the end."
"He has got a very smooth action," he continued – "like a hovercraft. His feet don't touch the ground."
"He is still very green but he is doing the right things now and will definitely improve with more racing experience."
