Champion
trainer Gai Waterhouse has an early stranglehold on the $2 million Magic
Millions 2YO Classic according to corporate bookie Sportsbet with her
Hinchinbrook filly Carriages the early favourite.
Waterhouse trains three of the top four at the head of the Sportsbet all-in
market for the juvenile feature with the only other horse, Prompt Return an
unlikely runner.
"Gai is a powerhouse when it comes to two-year-olds and she looks to have
at least three quality juveniles in the camp," Sportsbet's Will Byrne said.
Waterhouse's Clockwise Classic winner Carriages heads betting at $5 ahead of
the Breeders Plate winner Vancouver (Medaglia D'Oro (USA), impressive recent
barrier trial winner Ready Already (More Than Ready USA) and Prompt Return (Beneteau)
at $6.
Waterhouse is seeking her fifth Magic Millions 2YO Classic win having been
successful in the past with Assertive Lad, Dance Hero, Excellerator and Driefontein.
Interestingly, none of Waterhouse's previous winners were super expensive – Assertive
Lad was bought for $110,000, Dance Hero for $90,000, Excellerator for $50,000
and Driefontein for $75,000.
Carriages fits that profile, bought from the Yarraman Park draft for $110,000.
"The way Carriages won at Ballarat last Saturday, it's not surprising she
heads the market," Byrne said.
The Mark Riley-trained Of The Brave (Starspangledbanner) won the Listed MRC Debutant
Stakes at Caulfield last month and he's an $8 chance ahead of Pepperano (Court
Command), Liam Birchley's dominant Doomben winner last Saturday, next at $9.
Gai Waterhouse/ James Harron Bloodstock was the biggest buyer at the 2014 Magic
Millions securing 39 yearlings for $8.2 million, while her allied syndication business
Round Table Racing/ James Harron Bloodstock acquired a further 15 yearlings for
a tick over $2million including Carriages among their purchases.
Given that level of investment, multiple runners in the $2million feature for
the Waterhouse stable should be a forgone conclusion.
