Fresh from winning the Group I VRC Victoria Derby
with Kiwi bred colt Preferment, champion trainer Chris Waller has a new
addition to his stable that may well bring further Derby success in the autumn.
A dark horse from New Zealand, Tiger Tim will do his future racing for champion
Sydney trainer Chris Waller.
The son of Alamosa made one appearance from John Bary's Hastings stable and showed
his potential with a first-up success at Otaki last month.
"The only surprise was that he was able to do it on debut," he said. "He always
looked promising and we thought it might be at his second or third start.
"But then there is the (Jonathan) Riddell factor – he gets them into the race
and it was job done."
Tiger Tim was bred by Bill Gleeson, of Wellfield Stud, and Peter Gillespie and
they will remain in the ownership as part of a new Australasian syndicate to
race the three-year-old.
Tiger Tim is from the Zabeel mare Zatiger who won three races up to 1600 metres
and was placed in the Group III Manawatu Cup and the Listed Marton Cup. She is
a sister to Caulfield Cup runner-up Laebeel, the dam of classy Australian
stakes-winners Larry's Never Late and Collar.
Not surprisingly, the $A2 million Gr.1 ATC Derby (2400m) is a likely target for
Tiger Tim.
"He looks like a Derby horse," Bary said. "He's just a real dude and been an
absolute pleasure to have around the stable." – NZ Racing Desk.
