Atlante to Mapperley Stud

Media Release - Friday December 19

Group I winning Fastnet Rock entire Atlante is back where he made his Group One name ahead of a career at stud next year.

Atlante - Trish DunnellThe son of Fastnet Rock is currently in work at the Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman following his return from Australia and the finalisation of a deal that will see him stand at Mapperley Stud in 2015.

He's at Murray's place as he's a young horse and to be sitting in a paddock for months wouldn't be the best thing for him," studmaster Simms Davison said.

"He's gone back into work to keep him active. He is 100 percent sound and if everything goes perfectly then he could go fresh up into a decent race here next year.

"He's already done enough on the track so we'll just see how he progresses before a decision is made."

Atlante won last season's Listed Holloway Stakes for Baker and Forsman off the back of a maiden success and then triumphed in the Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas at his fifth appearance.

A Sydney campaign followed and an encouraging start with a runner-up finish in the Gr.2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill was subsequently hindered by wet tracks.

Atlante later joined Team Hawkes and last spring was the winner of the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes at Moonee Valley.

"I've always kept a very close eye on this horse and he showed so much raw ability," Davison said. "He ran second to Dissident in the Hobartville and he came back as a four-year-old to beat Trust In A Gust, who then went on to win the Sir Rupert Clarke and the Toorak.

"Atlante is an athlete and is a fantastic looking horse. He's lightly-raced and he was an easy horse to sell shares in."

Mapperley Stud has been joined in Atlante in a syndicate that includes former major stakeholder Lib Petagna and prominent breeders Graham Bax, James Chapman, Mark Chittick, Kevin Hickman, Brendan Lindsay, Tony Ryder, Rodney Schick, Sam Williams and Sir Peter Vela.

Atlante, who will stand alongside He's Remarkable next year, is out of the Group-performed More Than Ready mare Readyforcatherine.

"He was originally bought by Mark and Shelley Treweek at the Sydney Sale as a pin-hook and they are very good at what they do," Davison said.

"Bruce Perry then bought into him on behalf of Lib so to have great judges like them involved was proof of what a great type of horse he is."– NZ Racing Desk.
