Final Curtain Call

Mark Smith - Tuesday January 6
It was a busy time at Arrowfield back in 2012 with Snitzel leading the nation for number of mares served (248) while Smart Missile (196) led the way for first season stallions.

But that season also proved the last for three of the stud's stallions.

After 17 seasons at stud the final call came for champion sire Flying Spur when just two of the 39 mares he covered to early October went in foal.

From the second crop of Danehill, the Golden Slipper now lives out his life in contented retirement.

He left a colt and a filly from his final a crop and the filly heads to the Magic Millions Gold Coast .

Consigned by Corumbene Stud, the Flying Spur filly is the first foal of the lightly raced Encosta de Lago mare Inchita, a half-sister to the Group II winner Delta Form.

Inchita is a daughter of the top-class racemare Arborea, winner of the Group 1 VRC Oaks and One Thousand Guineas.

Three of Arborea's daughters have produced the stakes-winners Szumul, Drumbeats and Tai Tai Tess.

Another Arrowfield stallion that has only one on offer is Gio Ponti (USA).

A 7-time Group 1 winner by the successful Tale Of The Cat, Gio Ponti (USA) showed just how tough it has become for shuttle stallions as he attracted just 53 mares, leaving 40 foals.

He did not return last year.

Arrowfield will offer the only yearling by Gio Ponti (USA) at the Magic Millions, a filly (pictured) out of the Sydney placed Commands mare Jemison who hails from the family of Group 1 AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner and Golden Slipper runner-up Align.

The third Arrowfield stallion to have his final crop is Beneteau.

The son of Redoute's Choice died after covering 71 mares in his second season.

It's looking to be quite a loss. His first crop has come out running with four winners before Christmas including the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate winner Prompt Return.

Beneteau has seven lots catalogue at the Magic Millions but you are going to have to wait for them.

All seven are in book two.

Making particular appeal is Holbrook Stud's colt out of the reliable producer Foscat. Very accomplished on the racetrack, Foscat is the dam of four winners including the crack WA 2yo Trichologist (War Pass). This colt looks a clone of his sire.
