Confirmed as the leading buyer at Karaka for the tenth consecutive year, Ellis admitted he had "no Plan B" when he slugged it out with Australian trainer David Hayes before outlaying $800,000 to purchase Lot 429, a Fastnet Rock filly from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm.

The stunning bay filly has an extended pedigree that breeding buffs dream of. A daughter of Gr. 1 winner Il Quello Veloce she is descended from a line that includes broodmare sensation Parfore, the dam of Gr. 1 performers Tiger Tees, Terravista and Singapore Horse of the year, Super Easy.
"I waited the whole sale for her and that's pretty nerve wracking because if you don't win the battle there's nothing left to fall back on," admitted Ellis.
"I've been buying yearlings here since 1988 and I can say I've never seen a better quality filly. Every buyer who was looking for a filly would have wanted to take her home and thankfully we are the ones who get to do that.
Ellis confirmed this was the filly to complete his planned syndicate that includes both the Snitzel and Fastnet Rock colts that he bought on day one of the sale.
"We have already sold 50% of the syndicate shares and I would expect it won't be long before we fill the remaining shares when people see the quality of horses we have," he said.
When the hubbub surrounding the sale had died down, Lyndhurst Farm principal Mark Treweek was happy to reflect on the achievement of providing the top priced lot at the premier sale for a second time. The couple received $800,000 for an Encosta de Lago colt at the 2009 sale and matched that figure today.
"We are only a small operation and to achieve what we did in 2009 and repeat that again this year is just amazing," he said.
"I can't thank Henry Field from Newgate Stud enough as he sent us this filly about five months ago to prepare for the sale. He felt Karaka would be the best option for her and he has been proven dead right.
"The improvement she has shown in the final few weeks before today has been amazing and the interest in her has been phenomenal. She was heavily sought after to parade the minute she got here and I think that showed during the time she was in the ring as there appeared to be plenty of buyers keen on her."
The filly is the third of four foals produced by her dam who was sold by Newgate at the 2014 Magic Millions Broodmare sale where she was purchased by Pencarrow Stud and New Zealand Bloodstock principal Sir Peter Vela. – NZ Racing Desk
