Our Inglis Classic draft has been a happy hunting ground for the budget
conscious buyer for many years with some obvious highlights including Group I
superstars Whobegotyou and Triple Honour.Bought for just $19,500 in 2007 by well-known owner Laurence Eales, the Mark Kavanagh trained Whobegotyou proved one of the best gallopers of his generation winning the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas at three. He developed into a top class weight-for-age performer and retired with 10 wins and $3.2 million in earnings.
One of the early stars to put champion trainer Chris Waller on the map was high class miler Triple Honour. A $50,000 purchase for his trainer in 2006, Triple Honour won the Group I AJC Doncaster Handicap among his seven victories and retired with earnings topping $2.2 million.
Bold front-running sprinter/ miler Budriguez was a great purchase for his trainer David Jolly, snapped up for just $25,000 in 2008. The now eight year-old gelding has won close to $700,000 in prizemoney and was placed in a recent trial in Adelaide as he attempts to return from a long injury enforced layoff.
Triple Crown Syndications hit serious paydirt when they bought Charge Forward filly Cavalry Rose in 2011 for $85,000. She posted a valuable Black Type win in the Group III MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes and was sold as a broodmare prospect in foal to Pierro for $650,000, providing a great return for her big syndicate of owners.
A feature of our draft this year will be the 16 yearlings by our young dual
Group I winning sire Star Witness, whose talented daughter Kimberley Star was
beaten a neck by highly rated colt Odyssey Moon in the $250,000 Inglis Nursery
RL in December. Star Witness also featured on Australia Day when his talented daughter Serenade thrashed her rivals to win by five lengths at Canterbury in a thoroughly dominant performance for the Mike Moroney stable.
A $26,000 Inglis Classic Summer Book purchase from the Widden Stud draft for Paul Moroney Bloodstock, Serenade runs in the colours of prominent Melbourne owner Rupert Legh and will no doubt head towards the $250,000 Inglis Classic on February 7 at Rosehill.
