Raised and Grazed - Stars of Tomorrow

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 2

What do star juveniles Vancouver and Fireworks have in common apart from being both bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds?.

The honour roll of star performers 'raised and grazed' at Coolmore Australia is a long and illustrious one. The winners of over 350 stakes races have emerged from Coolmore's Jerrys Plains farm since 1996.

On Saturday, two new names were added to the list in the shape of impressive Group Three winning juveniles Vancouver and Fireworks .

Fireworks as a foal at CoolmoreThe hitherto unbeaten colt Vancouver cemented his claims as one of the leading fancies for the G1 Golden Slipper by taking out the G3 Canonbury Stakes over Rosehill's 1100m track, while Fireworks broke her maiden on her third start, producing a strong late finish to snatch the G3 Widden Stakes over the same course and distance.

Foaled and nurtured through the formative stages of their careers at Coolmore, both horses were bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds, who retains ownership of Fireworks .

The Widden Stakes result was a particularly positive one with not only the winner, Fireworks , graduating from the Jerrys Plains nursery, but also eye-catching runner-up Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock) and fast-finishing fourth place-getter Micucci .

The aforementioned quartet are amongst a host of exciting two year-old prospects to spring from Coolmore this season. In New Zealand on Friday, the promising filly Special Memories (Fastnet Rock), highly regarded by trainer Jason Bridgman, shed her maiden tag with ease over 1100m at Pukekohe. Other performers of note include G3 Maribyrnong Plate place-getter Sailing By (Fastnet Rock), stakes-placed New Zealand Juvenile Outlaw Kate and promising trio New Wings (Choisir), Pride Of Dubai and Denpurr .

The success of the current juvenile crop runs in tandem with the equally impressive results being achieved by their three year-old counterparts. Almost 60 individual winners have emerged from this crop to date, including the likes of high-class performers such as Petrology (Fastnet Rock), Lumosty (Fastnet Rock), Winx , Magicool (Fastnet Rock), Wine Tales (Tale Of The Cat) and Rockfast (Fastnet Rock), aswell as a host of other promising performers like Kawbata (Encosta de Lago), Quick Strike (High Chaparral), Armada (Fastnet Rock) and Sadler's Lake (High Chaparral) to name but a few.
