Ones to Watch – Wyong

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 5
Two blue-blooded three year-olds opened their accounts at Wyong on Thursday one with Derby aspirations by High Chaparral (IRE) and the other a royally bred son of Redoute's Choice.

John Sargent puts the polish on High Chaparral gelding Omeros, who blossomed at his second run over 1600 metres, careering away to win by three and three-quarter lengths.

A $120,000 Magic Millions National Weanling purchase from the Eliza Park International draft for Boomer Bloodstock, Omeros is a half-brother to stakes-winner Saturn Rock and is the third winner for slick stakes-winner Satin Robes, a daughter of Group I winner Lady Madonna.

He has an interesting mix of stamina through his sire and speed through his female line, so it will be interesting to see how far he can run.

We'll find out sooner rather than later as he is entered for the Group I ATC Australian Derby, a race the progeny of High Chaparral have a great record in.

Coolmore will offer a yearling half-sister by Fastnet Rock to Omeros at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 156.

Aperchoix as a yearlingA barrier malfunction ruled Aperchoix out of contention when he attempted to make his debut last week, but given a fair start in the 1200 metre maiden, the Clarry Conners trained colt got the job done in style.

He cruised home to win by two and a quarter lengths as a short priced favourite and will no doubt chase Black Type in coming weeks.

An $800,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft, Aperchoix was the most expensive Redoute's Choice sold at that sale.

He runs for a syndicate that includes his breeder Dr Edmund Bateman and Segenhoe Thoroughbreds and is the first winner for Group I winning Encosta de Lago mare Apercu, who was also raced by the Batemans and retained as a broodmare.

Apercu has a yearling filly and filly foal by Fastnet Rock and was covered last spring by Foxwedge.
