Bowness Stud arrived back in Adelaide this week for the 2015 renewal of South Australia's premier thoroughbred bloodstock auction with another very appealing draft of yearlings and fresh on the heels of two memorable Magic Millions triumphs by a celebrated sales graduate.
It was just two years ago that the New South Wales stud ventured to the Morphettville sales complex with a second crop Bon Hoffa colt that has since won five of 11 career starts and close on $740,000 in prizemoney.
Deiheros is of course the horse's name, and there is no better advertisement for any vendor selling yearlings at the Adelaide assembly over the next week.
Deiheros was last seen in action in January posting a brilliant two-length victory in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on the Gold Coast. Trained at Morphettville by Lloyd Kennewell, the quality son of Bon Hoffa was recording his second valuable Magic Millions success after an emphatic five-and-a-half lengths home-track win in the 2014 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic this time last year.
The exploits of Deiheros speak volumes for a sale that has proven to be a stepping-stone for a host of hugely successful racetrack performers. The 3-year-old's burgeoning career also illustrates the calibre of bloodstock capable of being found in a Bowness Stud yearling sale consignment.
In fact, Bowness Stud has a very strong chance of being responsible for its second Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic winner in a row.The Phillip Stokes-trained Caro Khan has emerged as a very live hope for the coveted juvenile event following a last start victory in a 2YO Handicap staged at Gawler on February 21.
The handsome son of Denman was sold at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Bowness Stud to bloodstock agent Anthony Cavanagh for $140,000. The youngster now races in the colours of prominent Victorian owner Rob Menzies and is one of 10 acceptors for Monday's feature in which the gelding will start from 'pole position' after drawing barrier No. 1.
The 2015 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale offering of Bowness Stud includes progeny of champion racehorse and sire Lonhro, as well as Wanted, Domesday, Equiano (Fr), Myboycharlie (Ire) and Epsom Derby winner Authorized (Ire). Notably, the auction's only three Lots by Deiheros' sire Bon Hoffa are to be found in the stud's Book 2 consignment.
Should Caro Khan emulate the 2014 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic success of Deiheros come Monday, then the Bowness Stud draft should automatically become the starting point for anyone seriously looking for next year's winner of the very same contest.
