Turning $20,000 into $200,000?

Media Release - Friday March 6
There is more than one yearling sale in Australia held in the month of April.

There has been a justified newly found confidence in the Queensland Racing Industry with the announcement of increased prizemoney and an enhanced QTIS Bonus Scheme.

In fact there has been no better time to race 2 & 3YO QTIS eligible horses in Queensland.

The good news for yearling buyers is there are 117 quality yearlings on offer at this year's Capricornia Yearling Sale  (sale and carnival April 9- 12), 102 are QTIS eligible with some yearlings also from popular interstate sires.

This sale has a history of producing some bargain buys for astute buyers, and with a sale average of under $10000 it makes it a sale that shouldn't be missed.

Undoubtedly our most famous sale graduate is River Lad. He won our 2 & 3YO Capricornia Classic Races before blossoming into the Group One performer he is today.

With total prizemoney of $1.77 million amassed to date it's hard to believe that he was passed in for only $4,000 at our 2009 sale. Last year's $100,000 2YO Classic winner was Quick Assault who cost his owners the princely sum of $1,000.

MythologistThere are many other graduates who have sold for under $20,000 that have gone on to win more than $200,000.

One of those is the Hidden Dragon, QTIS registered gelding Mythologist, who was sold at our 2012 sale by regular leading local vendor, Kerrod Smyth, from Laurel Glen Equine Centre.

If you wanted a poster horse to promote breeding and racing in Provincial and Country Queensland, then Mythologist is the logical pick in recent times.

Born and bred on the banks of the mighty Fitzroy River near Rockhampton this yearling took the eye of leading 2YO trainer in Rockhampton Mr Lyle Rowe. Lyle was a very accomplished jockey and in his hay day as a young jockey won the 1967 Stradbroke Handicap on Mr Hush.

He purchased this colt after training his half-brother by Hayil, Let It Hail, to ten wins. In Lyle's own words at the time he bought him he thought that the $18,000 he paid for him was a genuine bargain.

Good judge Mr Rowe!

Mythologist has now won 11 races, $247,450 in prizemoney and still winning races as a 4YO. This is probably not outstanding in its own right, but most of us wouldn't mind if he was picking grass in our back yard I'm sure. What is truly a clear victory for grass roots racing is that he has won all of his races on country and provincial tracks, mostly at Callaghan Park in Rockhampton.

His record stands to prove that we do a fairly good job in the bush, the QTIS scheme puts serious dollars into owner's pockets, you don't have to pay a small fortune for a horse to win $250,000 and that the Capricornia Yearling Sale should be on the shopping list for all serious QTIS eligible yearling buyers this year.

Our sale and racing carnival is on the 9th to 12th of April and our flagship sale race on offer is the 2016 $100,000 2YO Classic exclusive to sale graduates, with a $20,000 Fillies Bonus up for grabs as well. There is also a $30,000 3YO race in 2017. The sale starts at 11.00AM on Sunday 12th April at the Rockhampton Showgrounds.
