The Golden Slipper is a race that carries huge importance within the breeding industry and many of the big farms have a real interest in what goes on today.
In the fillies event we have some of the biggest breeders in the country going head to head.
Darley have home bred fillies Ottoman and Calaverite engaged while Fairway Thoroughbreds (John Camilleri) have Fireworks, the White family (they've won the Slipper previously with Marscay) have Mine Two, Arrowfield have Stay With Me (they won the Slipper with her mum Miss Finland as well as with Flying Spur) and Newhaven Park have English (they've bred or raced four past Slipper winners in John's Hope, Vivarchi, Burst, and Prowl).
In the colt's division we see Darley again with their homebred colt Furnaces and Vinery with the impressive last start winner Headwater, who they bought at Inglis Easter from the Cressfield draft for $500,000.
He's already looking like a good investment and might look a whole lot better come 1 pm today.
Unbeaten colt Vancouver was bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds and bought at Magic Millions by Gai Waterhouse/James Harron for $185,000 and he too is looking like money well spent for his owners, who include Dr Edmund and Belinda Bateman.
They have invested heavily in bloodstock in recent years and have enjoyed considerable success with an array of stakes horses headed by the Group I winner Foxwedge, who is off to a promising start with his stud career at Newgate Farm.
If one of these three colts can win today, they will go a long way towards sealing a future career at stud with the only obstacles standing in their path apart from each other being the talented geldings Voilier and Mishani Honcho.
