Mill Park Sold Tanby Wins Adelaide Cup

Seasoned stayer Tanby hadn't won a race since the Group II MRC Zipping Classic in 2012, but the eight year-old son of Galileo (IRE) was the Tanby of old at Morphettville on Monday, surging late to snatch victory in the Group II SAJC Adelaide Cup.

Tanby as a yearlingA $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the draft of Mill Park Stud, Tanby was originally part of the Lloyd Williams team, but when his form tapered off he was on-sold for $140,000 and joined the stable of Mick Cerchi.

Tanby has been consistent without winning over the summer months, but with 53 kg on his back and a two mile trip to negotiate, he was able to recapture his best.

Well ridden by Dean Holland, the old stager won by a nose taking his overall record to 10 wins and 10 placings from 45 starts with prizemoney topping $1million.

"He has been going terrific and we knew that he could run the journey out," Mick Cerchi told Sky Racing World.

"I don't think you feel confident when you are in the Adelaide Cup, so you just have to do your best.

"We got the horse as good as we could get him and as sound as we could get him and we have got the chocolates."

Bred by Steve Bennetts, Tanby is a half-brother to Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner and stakes-placed Viking Star being one of four winners from top class producer Dane Belltar, a Group III winning daughter of Danewin.

Dane Belltar produced a colt foal by Street Cry (IRE) last spring and is now in foal to Sebring.
