Star Mares Retired

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 13
Sub-standard recent runs for Group I winning mares Dear Demi and Diamond Drille has led to connections announcing their retirement.

A homebred for John Singleton prepared by Clarry Conners, Dear Demi scored a career highlight win in the Group I VRC Oaks and bows out with seven wins from 40 starts and prizemoney topping $2.1 million.

Dear Demi

By successful shuttle sire Dehere (USA), Dear Demi is the first foal of blue-blooded Zabeel mare Shirley, an unraced daughter of Golden Slipper winner Merlene.

Clarry Conners revealed Dear Demi had been sold to Japan as have been a number of other top mares in recent years, but John Singleton still has her dam Shirley, who produced a colt by Exceed and Excel last year and is now in foal to Fastnet Rock.

Greg and Donna Kolivos have also confirmed retirement for Al Maher's talented daughter Diamond Drille, who won the Group I ATC Queen of the Turf Stakes last year for Gai Waterhouse.

Diamond Drille

Diamond Drille won five of 18 starts and nearly $1million in prizemoney, proving a great investment having been bought for $200,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2011 from the Emirates Park draft.

She will be covered this spring by the former Kolivos owned Golden Slipper winning superstar Pierro, who now stands at Coolmore.
