Darley stallion Exceed And Excel is the frontrunner as the likely mate
for star broodmare Parfore , who had an interesting pedigree update at Canterbury
on Thursday .
The storm over Sydney this week thwarted her travel across the Tasman from her
New Zealand base at Cambridge's Wentwood Grange.
However, the Mike Ryan-owned mare soon transfer to the Hunter Valley farm
Segenhoe Stud, where she will foal down the Rip Van Winkle offspring she is
carrying and be based for the next phase of her stud career.
The Gold Brose mare has already produced Group I winning Australian sprinters
Tiger Tees and Terravista, three-time Singapore-Group One winner and Horse of
the Year Super Easy, as well as fellow stakes winners Our Lukas and Ball Of
Muscle in a dazzling career at stud.
"She's Mike's pride and joy and he always takes particular care in
choosing which stallion to go to," said Wentwood Grange stud manager Dean
Hawkins.
"He'll make the decision as late as he can, but at this stage he is
favouring Exceed And Excel over Medaglia D'Oro."
Hawkins was looking forward to watching the next phase of Parfore's career from
afar but noted that two of her best sons, Super Easy and Tiger Tees, were
raised at Wentwood Grange, where her Darci Brahma weanling has remained.
"She's a great mare and probably hasn't got the dues she has deserved.
She's 17 now and she's off to Segenhoe but she will come back to New Zealand to
retire here," Hawkins said.
The family received an interesting update at Canterbury on Thursday when four
year-old Captain Rio (GB) mare Bonete opened her winning account in Australia
for the Joe Pride stable when proving too good for the very smart Gai
Waterhouse trained filly Najoom.
Bonete was having her second run for Pride since transferring from New Zealand
where she had won one of nine previous starts.
Bonete is a sister-in-blood to Group I winner Terravista and half-sister to
Group III winner Mosse being one of seven winners from unraced Golden Sparkle a
full sister to Parfore. - NZ
