Aussies Star in South Africa

Tara Madgwick - Sunday April 26
It was a day to remember for Australian thoroughbreds at the big Turffontein meeting in South Africa on Saturday with four stakes-winners headed by Group I stars Wylie Hall and Alboran Sea.

Wylie Hall - courtesy SAHorseracingThe Group I President's Champions Challenge over 2000 metres produced a Group I quinella for champion sire Redoute's Choice when his older star Wylie Hall defeated his champion three year-old filly Majmu by a length and a quarter.

Prepared by Weiho Marwing for Michael Leaf, five year-old Wylie Hall has been performing at the top level since his three year-old days when he won the Group I South African Derby and he was always going to be a tough customer for Majmu to overcome.

The Mike de Kock trained filly was sent out favourite, but came up short at the line, chasing valiantly but beaten a length and a quarter.

It was the fourth time Redoute's Choice has produced a Group I quinella and is the fifth Group I win in South Africa for his progeny.

An outstanding galloper, Wylie Hall has won six of 20 starts, four of those wins coming in stakes races.

A $205,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Newhaven Park, Wylie Hall is a half-brother to Group I winning sprinter Absolute Champion and is one of seven winner from Ideal Planet mare Beauty Belle, whose family features Group I winners Grand Armee, Drum, Anamato and Dealer Principal.

Beauty Belle is now back in foal to Redoute's Choice.

If Majmu is the best three year-old filly in South Africa over some ground, then Alboran Sea is surely the best at a sprint trip registering her third win at the elite level when taking out the Group I Computaform Sprint over 1000 metres against the older sprinters.

Alboran Sea as a yearlingThe Mike de Kock trained daughter of Coolmore shuttler Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) proved her brilliance in the 1000 metre weight-for-age sprint scoring by three-quarters of a length in 55.59 seconds.

Bred and offered for sale by Rosemont Stud, Alboran Sea was a $105,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Form Bloodstock and has won five of nine starts.

She is a sibling to stakes-placed Trafalgar Legacy and Light Express being the fifth winner from five to race from Lady's Light (USA), who was bought by Rosemont for $20,000 at the 2011 Inglis Broodmare Sale when carrying Alboran Sea.

An import from a big American Black Type family, Lady's Light had a yearling colt by Rosemont Stud's Toorak Toff that sold for $300,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

She also has a Starspangledbanner colt to follow, but missed last year when covered again by the fertility hampered stallion.

The Group II SA Fillies Nursery went the way of exciting More Than Ready (USA) filly Entisaar, who won the 1160 metre dash by two and a half lengths.

Entisaar as a yearlingThe Mike de Kock trained filly has won two of three starts carrying the blue and white colours of Sheikh Hamdan.

Shadwell have been big buyers at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in recent years and Entisaar is another of their successful purchases, snapped up for $300,000 from the draft of Vinery Stud.

Entisaar is the first winner for Group III placed Catbird mare Purrpurrlena, a daughter of stakes-winner Magdalena.

The same connections had to settle for second in the Group I SA Nursery with Redoute's Choice filly Shaama taking on the colts and going down by a length at her second start following an easy debut win.

A $450,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell Australia from the draft of Newgate Farm, Shaama is a three-quarter sister to Group III winner Jazz Song being the second winner from Group I winner Absolut Glam.

Scoring her first Black Type victory in the Group II Gerald Rosenberg stakes was promising three year-old filly Tamaanee, a $40,000 Inglis Classic Summer Book Sale purchase from the Yarraman Park draft.

A three year-old filly by Teofilo (IRE), the Sean Tarry trained Tamaanee showed her class when beating older rivals to win over 2000 metres by three lengths and has won three of nine starts.

She runs for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa's Al Adiyaat South Africa (Pty) Ltd and carries his yellow and blue colours.

Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park for Pedrille Thoroughbreds, Tamaanee is the first winner for Cangino, a winning half-sister to Champion Australian First Season Sire I Am Invincible.

Cangino has a yearling filly and weanling filly to follow by Dream Ahead (USA) and was covered last spring by Denman.

Tamaanee is the 37th stakes-winner for Darley's Galileo son Teofilo, the sire of Group I ATC Doncaster Handicap winner Kermadec.

Adding to the Aussie success at Kenilworth was  the debut two year-old win for Professsor Brian from the Joey Ramsden stable over 1200 metres.

An $80,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Turangga Farm draft for Joey Ramsden/ Tawny Bloodstock, Professor Brian is a half-brother to stakes-placed Mahican being by Encosta de Lago from Group III placed Eskaw.

Three year-old High Chaparral (IRE) filly Sassy Sal also posted her second win from five starts when scoring over a mile at Kenilworth.

A $50,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft for K Truter, Sassy Sal is the third winner for Chevaleresse (IRE), a half-sister to Group II winner Riyadian and to the dam of Hong Kong stakes-winner Charles the Great.
