First Winner for Melito

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 27
Former popular Redoute's Choice racemare Melito broke the ice with her first winner over the weekend with her Australian bred two year-old Encosta de Lago colt Campbell Junior opening his account at Tokyo in Japan.

Campbell Junior as a yearlingRacing on grass over 2000 metres on debut, something unheard of for a two year-old in Australia, the Noriyuki Hori trained colt beat a big field of 17 to win impressively by a length and a half.

Watch him win here.

Campbell Junior was a $400,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for leading Japanese owner / breeder Kastumi Yoshida and is the first foal of Melito.

Bought by Tom Magnier at the 2012 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $1,650,000 when in foal to Encosta de Lago, Melito was a stable star for Gerald Ryan, winning five races and over $1.9 million with highlight wins in the Group I AJC TJ Smith Stakes and Qld Tatts Winter Stakes.

By champion sire Redoute's Choice from stakes-winning Marauding mare Cloister, Melito comes from a superb Black Type family featuring Group I stars such as Zeditave and Greys Inn and this season's brilliant Group III winning two year-old colt Furnaces.

She was sent to the Northern Hemisphere by Coolmore after producing Campbell Junior along with a number of other high profile Australian bred mares including Atlantic Jewel, Sea Siren and Nechita.

Melito has been covered by Coolmore supersire Galileo for the past couple of seasons and has a yearling colt and filly foal by the champion son of Sadler's Wells and is booked to visit him again this year.
