Guy Mulcaster is constantly moving forward in
his global search for racing success.
The respected New Zealand bloodstock agent has enjoyed a stellar innings with
his purchases, but he's not resting on his laurels.
Mulcaster has been wholly or partly responsible for nine Group One winners of
10 top-flight races across Australasia in the 2014-15 season.
"It all comes down to the support of good clients," he said. "They've backed me
and you have to back your own judgement and then it's always about looking for
the next good horse.
"I'll be off to Australia again soon and then to England again after that."
At the top of the success list this season has been dual Group One winner
Sacred Star (Telegraph Handicap, NRM Sprint) purchased in conjunction with
Raffles Farm's Bruce Sherwin and trainer Tony Pike, as was the now Waikato
Stud-domiciled Sacred Falls.
He took his Group One haul to four last spring when successful in the George
Main Stakes while Raffles' Rock Diva claimed top honours in the Auckland Cup.
Mulcaster has also formed a close and successful association with Sydney's
champion trainer Chris Waller.
One Thousand Guineas winner Amicus, VRC Derby winner Preferment and the
Doncaster Mile hero Kermadec were Australasian purchases while the net was cast
further afield to Europe for Foreteller (Underwood Stakes), Moriarty (Kingston
Town Classic) and Grand Marshall (Sydney Cup).
"We spent a number of years going backwards and forwards and not being able to
afford much in the tried horse market, but Chris has done such a great job with
them that we've built up more clients," Mulcaster said.
"It took us two or three trips to work out the types to target before others
jumped on the band wagon.
"Three or four years ago they were more readily available, I'm not saying it's
impossible now, but it has definitely got harder. I'm always looking at other
markets and tried horses in New Zealand and Australia, you never know what's
around the corner."
Mulcaster branched out on his own in 2008 after gaining experience overseas and
at home with New Zealand Bloodstock, and a training partnership with Laurie
