Stud's promising young sire Tavistock already has one Australian Group I winner
under his belt this season in Rosehill Guineas hero Volkstok'n'barrell and is
shooting for another on Saturday week.
Victorian jockey Noel Callow will ride Kiwi galloper Werther in Saturday week's
Group I South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville.
The Andrew Campbell-trained Tavistock gelding earned his shot at the Classic
with his last-start win in the Gr.2 Championship Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie
under Leith Innes.
Werther has won three of his 10 starts, with all three wins coming in his last
five starts since February.
Werther has remained in the north since his Championship Stakes win and has
pleased Masterton trainer Campbell with his trackwork at Cambridge, where the
three-year-old has been stabled with Trent Busuttin.
"He's done really well," Campbell said on Wednesday.
"With the trip away, we opted to leave him up north with Trent but he
hasn't missed a beat. He's really bright and he galloped absolutely super
yesterday morning. I'm over the moon with him."
Werther was booked to fly to Australia on Wednesday.
He is the second-highest rated entry for the Derby behind Perth filly Delicacy,
a winner of the Gr.3 West Australian Oaks and Gr.2 West Australian Derby, both
run over 2400m. - NZ Racing Desk
