Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday May 22
Few doubt the enormous ability of the Paul Messara-trained Rekindled Power, who contests Saturday's Group III Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben, yet he has just one win from his six starts to show for it.

It seems a common theme among this richly talented family.

His three-quarter brother Rekindled Interest won three races, one at two, one at three and one at four, yet he was among the best of his generation.

To be fair the son of Redoute's Choice raced exclusively in stakes class after breaking his maiden at his career debut at Bendigo in what was his only start as a 2-year-old back in March 2010.

His other two wins came at Moonee Valley, defeating Lion Tamer in the Group II Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) and in the Group II Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) defeating Alcopop and Whobegotyou.

With nearly a $1 million in earnings for owner/breeder Jonathan Munz, Rekindled Interest also placed three times at Group 1 level in the 2011 W S Cox Plate, Mackinnon Stakes and George Ryder Stakes.

Rekindled Interest's year younger brother Rekindled Alliance (pictured) also possessed untapped ability yet, when his life was tragically cut short when suffering a heart attack in training, Rekindled Alliance had just one win from ten starts.

The $400,000 yearling was placed on four occasions in eight starts at Group level. He finished second to Colorado Clare in the Group II Phar Lap Stakes before taking the runner-up spot behind Australian Derby runner-up Polish Knight in the Group II Tulloch Stakes as well as the 2011 Group III Spring Stakes and was third in the Group III Frank Packer Plate.

Rekindled Interest and Rekindled Alliance are out of the unraced Blushing Groom mare Rekindled Affair (IRE) who began her broodmare career in Europe where she left the 3-time American stakes-winner Where We Left Off (Dr Devious) and the 4-time winner and 4-time stakes-placed mare Rekindled Applause (GB) (Royal Applause).

Both Rekindled Affair (IRE) and her daughter Rekindled Applause (GB) arrived in Australia in 2006.

Rekindled Affair (IRE) had two colts and a filly, all by Redoute's Choice, before her death in 2009 but she did map out the affinity with the champion Arrowfield Stud stallion, which looks like serving her daughter well.

Both Redoute's Choice and Rekindled Affair trace back to the celebrated family of Stolen Hour.

The first three foals out of Rekindled Applause (GB) resulted in two maidens and the winner of one race from 18 starts but thing took a turn for the better with her first foal by Redoute's Choice, which is Rekindled Power.

The Paul Messara-trained 3yo broke his maiden at Bendigo back in October last year and opened this preparation with a most promising third behind Delectation and Bring Me The Maid, with Golden Slipper winner Mossfun back in fourth, in the Group II Arrowfield 3yo Sprint at Randwick back on April 11.

In his only subsequent run the son of Redoute's Choice came with a late-finishing burst from last on the turn to finish fourth, beaten less than a length, in the Mick Dittman 3yo Plate at Doomben.
