Her trainer Mike de Kock has revealed on his website that the filly suffered a bone chip in her knee during the race last Saturday and connections have elected to retire the daughter of Rock of Gibraltar (IRE).
Alboran Sea will be retired to her owners Wilgerbosdrift Farm and Mike de Kock
commented: "This is an unexpected setback for all as far as her racing career
is concerned, but on the bright side Alboran Sea will make a great broodmare,
she will be a super addition to Mary's (Mary Slack) broodmare paddock. She will
be covered first by Soft Falling Rain."There is not much more one can ask of a three-year-old filly. She won the Gr1 Cape Flying Chamionship and the Computaform Sprint in one season, you'll have to go a long way to beat that.
"The owners considered an overseas campaign for her at a later stage but given the current route through Mauritius they decided not to put her through it. It was a privilege to train Alboran Sea, she's a filly of great calibre and she did us proud, provided lots of thrills."
Bred and offered for sale by Rosemont Stud, Alboran Sea was a $105,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Form Bloodstock and won five of 10 starts.
She is a sibling to stakes-placed Trafalgar Legacy and Light Express being the fifth winner from five to race from Lady's Light (USA), who was bought by Rosemont for $20,000 at the 2011 Inglis Broodmare Sale when carrying Alboran Sea.
Rosemont Stud sold a yearling colt by Toorak Toff from Lady's Light at Inglis Easter this year for $300,000 and the mare has a weanling colt by Starspangledbanner to follow.
