Value Top and Bottom

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday June 17
Whether you are shopping at the top end of the market or the bottom, the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale has something for everyone.

Last year's sale-topper was a stylish bay Foxwedge colt from Ekleel that fetched $175,000 when secured by Inglis as agent for Heinrich Bloodstock.

Re-offered as part of their dispersal at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, he sold for a cool $340,000 when bought by Hawkes Racing.

The foundation sire for Newgate Farm, Foxwedge is a Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock, whose offspring have sold exceptionally well at yearling sales this year and have entered all the leading stables.

His youngsters at this sale appeal as prime pin-hooking candidates given the commercial appeal of their sire and high potential for upside if his stock come out running early.

Lot 22 Colt Foxwedge x French Resistance – Supreme Thoroughbreds

Lot 56 Filly Foxwedge x Khepri – Shadwell Farm

Lot 138 Filly Foxwedge x See My Baby – Shadwell Farm

Lot 172 Colt Foxwedge x Top Classic – Rheinwood Pastoral

Lot 173 Filly Foxwedge x Touch Too Much – Donnybrook Estates

For those shopping at a more affordable level of the market then it's worth considering the story of Contract Racing's star producer Razor Blade, the dam of this season's Group I SAJC Goodwood Handicap winner Flamberge.

Flamberge - Jenny BarnesShe was sold as a weanling at this sale in 1995 for just $2,000 and proved a great success for her new owners winning eight of 15 starts for the late Guy Walter highlighted by a Group III win in the Tatts Winter Stakes, which now carries Group I status as the Tatts Tiara.

Contract Racing bought her back privately at the conclusion of her racing career and she's been every bit as successful at stud as she was on the track.

Razor Blade has left six winners with Flamberge joined by Group II winner Sunburnt Land and stakes-winner Curtana as well as stakes-placed Joyeuse and Durendal.

Razor Blade is still going strong, producing a Helmet colt last year and due to foal to Redoute's Choice.

Her success highlights the value that can be found right across the market at Victoria's biggest weanling and breeding stock sale.
