Randwick Juvenile Winner for Nicconi

Tara Madgwick - Saturday June 20
Widden Stud's Nicconi keeps gaining momentum with a flow of winners in the back half of the season including the Gerald Ryan trained two year-old Backstab, who scored a tenacious win at Randwick on Saturday as favourite.

BackstabWith two placings and a win at Hawkesbury at his only three previous runs, Backstab was too fit and determined for his rivals in this 1200 metre assignment, leading throughout to salute.

Backstab (pictured Steve Hart)  was a $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Widden Stud draft for Jadeskye Racing and was the most expensive yearling from the second crop of dual Group I winning sprinter Nicconi.

He will now head to the spelling paddock with over $100,000 in prizemoney.

Bred by the original Nicconi partners, he is the first foal of Divine Choice, a stakes-placed three-quarter sister to Group II winner Valentia.

Divine Choice has another yearling colt to follow by Nicconi and is due to foal to Sebring this year.

Nicconi is now up to 41 winners for the season and is a clear second on the Australian Second Season Sires List by winners and is third on earnings.

He stands this spring at the affordable fee of $11,000.
