First Stakes-Winner for Canford Cliffs

Tara Madgwick - Sunday June 28
Royal Ascot hero Canford Cliffs (IRE), a regular shuttler to Blue Gum Farm in Victoria, sired his first stakes-winner overnight in Ireland when two year-old colt Painted Cliffs captured the Group II Railway Stakes at The Curragh.

Canford CliffsThe Aidan O'Brien trained colt scored a dominant two and three-quarter length win in the six furlong sprint, his second win from three starts.

UK Racing Post offered a good assessment and believes there are more wins in store - PAINTED CLIFFS showed huge improvement from a workmanlike performance at Leopardstown where he looked little out of the ordinary but this was a performance of a different nature. Tracking the early generous pace, he quickened well to get to the front over a furlong out and moved back to the rail and from there he showed the gears that he possesses. It was a performance of high class on the face of it and really puts him into the mix for races like the Phoenix Stakes. He beat a quality field convincingly.

Painted Cliffs is one of six winners for Canford Cliffs, whose filly Bournemouth Belle was stakes-placed at Newmarket earlier in the day.

A 200,000 euro purchase from the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale for MV Magnier, Painted Cliffs is the second winner for Lulawin, a half-sister by Kyllachy to Group I winner Excellent Art.

Canford Cliffs will have his first Australian two year old runners next season and returns this spring to Blue Gum Farm at a fee of $13,750.
