Australian-breds well represented in Durban July

Darryl Sherer - Thursday July 2

Australian and New Zealand sires have a healthy representation in the four Group I races on South Africa's biggest day of racing at Greyville on Saturday.

The R3.5 million Durban July is arguably South Africa's most popular race and the 2200m contest features five Australian-bred and one from New Zealand in the final field of 20.

Redoute's Choice is represented by Group I winners Wylie Hall and Majmu, Lonhro by Group II winner The Conglomerate who will be ridden by Chad Schofield, Teofilo by promising filly Tamaanee and Encosta de Lago with Mac de Lago.

The July will be the final racetrack appearance for Wylie Hall (Beauty Belle), scheduled to stand at Vaughan Koster's Cheveley Stud Farm this season and having his third start in the race.

Unplaced in 2013 he finished runner-up to Legislate in the race last year with Futura, the top-weight on Saturday, behind him in third.

Group I winner Gold Onyx (Black Minnaloushe - Egoli Lass) finished seventh in the 2012 July behind Pomodoro and has not won in his last 16 races.

Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum-owned Majmu (Spontaneous) has won six of her eight races and finished runner-up to Wylie Hall in the Group I Presidents Champion Challenge (2000m) at Turffontein last time out.

The two features for juveniles are the R600,000 Golden Slipper Stakes for fillies and the Golden Horseshoe Stakes for the males, both over 1400m.

Star Witness has a runner in both with Mella Maria in the Golden Slipper and Lineker in the Golden Horseshoe.

Mella Maria (Sayahailmary) won over 1300m at Greyville at her last start and was third in the Group III Pretty Polly Stakes over 1100m at Turffontein in March.

Lineker (Battle Maiden) won over 1200m on debut at Scottsville and was third in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes (1400m) at Greyville at his only other start on June 6.

Listed placed Almashooqa (Bernardini - Joy Of Flight) is in the Golden Horseshoe while Brazuca (Teofilo - Base Paradise) and Muwaary (O'Reilly - Silently) are both part of the 16 strong field for the fillies race.

In the R750,000 Garden Province Stakes for females over 1600m Acrostar (Danehill Dancer) is the sole representative.
