Continuing the grand run of success for trainer Paul Perry and jockey Thomas Huet, Surfin' Safari repelled the challenge of Chris Waller's highly regarded Encosta de Lago colt by a half-neck to take his record to a highly commendable four wins and two thirds from six starts for earnings of $138,140.
Godolphin's Medaglia D'oro (USA) colt Stalwart was one and a half-lengths back in third.
There was extra merit in Surfin' Safari's fighting effort as he was caught wide the trip.
"I wasn't happy to be there but I was comfortable," Huet said.
"He was very relaxed on the turn and when Blake Shinn came up next to me I gave my horse a smack and he was too strong.
"Maybe off the fence is the best place to be, but that's easy to say when you win."
A $180,000 Inglis Easter Session II purchase from the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft for his trainer, Surfin' Safari (pictured as a yearling) is the 12th foal of one of his stakes-placed Lake Alexandrina (Bluebird), a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner and sire Marauding and dual Listed winner Springsteen out of the Toorak Handicap winner Nunkalowe (Boysie Boy).
Surfin' Safari is one of four first crop winners by Choisir's Royal Ascot hero Starspangledbanner who stands at Rosemont Stud in Victoria this spring at a fee of $44,000.
